At 1910 hours on the night of 13 February 1943 Lancaster ED484 took off from Skellingthorpe detailed to bomb the submarine base at Lorient, France. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The bodies of three crew members were washed ashore and it was presumed that the aircraft had crashed in the sea. No trace of the aircraft or the others in the crew was found.
