At 1918 hours on 26 February 1943 Stirling R7279 took off from Bourn to attack Cologne, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it did not return to base. Following post war investigations and enquiries, it was recorded in 1950 that the missing crew members had no known graves.
