On return from a Bullseye exercise on 31 October 1942, Lancaster W4239 crashed about 200 yards outside the south east end of the Woodhall Spa airfield at about 1950 hours. Sergeant Matthams and Sergeant Francis died of their injuries, while others on boards were injured.
