On 21 February 1944, Wirraway A20-590 flown by Leading Aircraftman Massey, a Trainee Pilot, crashed during a solo night circuits and landings practice and he was killed. On the first approach, the aircraft’s wheels touched the ground and the pilot proceeded to go round again. At an altitude of about 300 feet, it turned across wind and then down wind, and immediately lost height and crashed about 1.75 miles from the aerodrome.
