Wellington BJ606 took off from Wickenby at 1842 hours on the night of 15/16 October 1942 to bomb Cologne, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it failed to return to base. Post war it was established that the aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed
at Wintershoven (Limburg), 9 kms north north west of Tongereai, Belgium, and all the crew members had been killed.
