In the absence of more suitable specialised aircraft, the Sunderlands in No. 19 Group still carried the burden of anti-shipping operations in the Bay of Biscay. … This marked offensive spirit brought special commendation from Air Chief Marshal Joubert (Commander-in Chief, Coastal Command, RAF), but the risks of these operations, though gladly accepted, were not commensurate with the actual damage caused. A tragic reminder of this fact came when, in quick succession, Flight Lieutenant Eric Bruce Martin (30th July) and Flight Lieutenant Edward St. Clair Yeoman (9th August) were sent out on similar duties, but were shot down and killed.

Extract from Herington, J. (John) (406545) Air War Against Germany and Italy 1939-1943, Australian War Memorial, Canberra, 1954 – Pages 287-8.

No signals were received from the aircraft which failed to return from the mission.
