At 1453 hours on 8 January 1945, Kittyhawk A29-350 took off from Kamiri airstrip at Noemfoor, Dutch New Guinea, for a slow running flight. Nothing further was heard from the aircraft, until reports were received from the 593 US Army Engineers that they had seen a P40 crash land outside the reef, approximately one mile east of the Komasoran airstrip at about 1630 hours. A Landing Craft was on the scene of the crash within 3 minutes, but could not locate the aircraft. Flight Sergeant Makeham’s body was recovered on the 11 January.
