Lancaster W4999 took off from Grimsby on the night of 29/30 July 1943 detailed to carry out an operational mission against Hamburg, Germany. The aircraft was attacked by a night fighter (although none were seen) or hit by anti-aircraft fire at 20,500 feet at 2227 hours eight miles south west of St Peters Point situated on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In the engagement aircraft gunner Flight Sergeant Mackie was killed, and Sergeant Porcher (1506853) (RAFVR) seriously injured. The aircraft returned to base where it landed at 0040 hours on 30 July. The list for crew members of W4999 on 29 July 1943 is not available.
