Wellington W5440 took off from Binbrook on the night of 25/26 February 1942 to bomb Kiel, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. It was later learned that the aircraft had crashed in the target area and all the crew members had been killed.
