At 2037 hours on the night of 6 September 1941 Whitley Z6881 took off from Middleton-St-George detailed to bomb Huls, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. Z6881 was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at 0125 hours at Bergum (Friesland), 12 kms east south east of Leeuwarden, Netherlands. All the crew members were killed.
