Flight Lieutenant Litchfield survived the crash of No. 459 Squadron Hudson aircraft FH227 (Flying Officer Reginald Alexander McFarlane (401136) (Pilot)) on 12 March 1943.

At about 1700 hours on 23 August 1944, Baltimore FW701 was hit by anti-aircraft fire while over its target at Lemestre, Italy. The aircraft burst into flames, became uncontrollable and crashed, killing Flight Lieutenant Litchfield. The crew members of FW701 were:
