On 29 November 1940, Wirraway A20-53 was one of three aircraft flying in formation from Townsville to Evans Head, New South Wales. Five miles south of St Lawrence, Queensland, A20-53 went missing from the formation. It had crashed at 0912 hours near the north entrance to the port of St Lawrence. The aircraft had overshot a clay pan and crashed into timber country, catching fire. Pilot Officer Lenne was seriously injured in the accident and died of his injuries on 19 December 1940 in the Mackay Hospital.
