On 21 September 1944, Spitfire BS530 was flying with the Squadron Leader Commanding Officer of No. 238 Squadron on a strafing mission over Northern Italy attacking ground objectives. At approximately 1600 hours BS530 failed to pull out of a dive. The Commanding Officer, pulling out of his dive and when flying over the area, saw the remains of the crashed BS530 in which Warrant Officer Lee had been killed.
