On the 27th June 1943, Oxford HN578 took off at 0050 hours on a solo non operational flight detailed to practice instrument flying. The aircraft was due back at 0205 hours, but had not returned by 0500 hours. At 0600 hours 3 aircraft searched without success. The aircraft had crashed at 0100 hours north of the Tackley Airfield and the Flight Sergeant Langley had been killed.
