At 2243 hours on the night of 12/13 June 1944, Lancaster ED938 took off from Kelstern detailed to bomb Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed near Spanbroek in Noord-Brabant about 9 kms north west of Hoorn. Five of the crew members were killed and two became Prisoners of War.
