At 1150 hours on 10 November 1943, Boomerang A46-108 flown by Flight Sergeant Jones crashed near Caloundra, Queensland, during a non-operational aerobatics exercise. Army personnel of a Coastal Artillery unit were eyewitnesses to the crash. The aircraft was first seen at 8,000 feet when it performed a loop. When at the top of the loop the aircraft rolled out at 90 degrees and flew straight and level. At this stage the aircraft was then seen to dive at a very shallow angle of 10/15 degrees, yawing from side to side while the engine was “screaming”. When at about 300 feet, and
100 yards inland from the beach, the aircraft rolled slowly on its back and struck the top of a rise. It then exploded on impact and Flight Sergeant Jones was killed.
