At 2230 hours on the night of 8 July 1943 Lancaster R5573 took off from Syerston detailed to bomb Cologne, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was on its way back from Germany and crashed in flames 2 kms west of Harze at 0200 hours on 9 July. All the crew members were killed.
