At 0640 hours on 8 March 1943 Spitfire AB894 took off from Hawkings on a shipping reconnaissance. The last plotted position of the aircraft was north of Ostend. Then nothing further was heard from the aircraft which failed to return to base. It was later recorded that Flying Officer Johnson was missing lost at sea.
