Volume 8 of the Official History records that Captain James came from Grange SA.
On 7 May 1918, Captain James, flying Avro aircraft B8707 along with Second Lieutenant Gordon Nash RAF were killed in a mid-air collision with Avro aircraft C4477 at 2,000 feet during aerial combat practice. C4477 was flown by Second Lieutenant John Gordon Ward RAF who was also killed.
