On 23 May 1943, Hampden AN142 took off from Patricia Bay on a navigational exercise over the sea. After sending distress signals, the aircraft returned to base at 1712 hours. It flew across the aerodrome flying on the port engine only at about 400 feet height. It yawed to starboard, stalled and crashed into the ground, catching fire. Three of the crew were killed and Sergeant Bishop died of his injuries on 27May 1943.
