On 16 March 1917, Second Lieutenant Hughes resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

During bombing practice on 14 November 1917, BE2e aircraft B4011 flown by Second Lieutenant Hughes collided in the air with Sopwith Camel aircraft B6262 flown by Second Lieutenant Hilliard Mark Armstrong RFC (from Markdale, Ontario, Canada) and both pilots were killed.  B4011 caught fire when it struck the ground.
