On 10 December 1944, Corporal Hudson, a Clerk General, died as a result of drowning when swimming in the Murrumbidgee River near a beach at the Brick Kiln reserve, about 3 miles east of Wagga Wagga. Corporal Hudson was not a strong swimmer and it was considered that the part of the river where the fatality occurred was unsafe for bathing, due to strong undercurrents, deep holes and snags in the bed of the river.
