At about 1720 hours on the 18 March 1944, Leading Aircraftman Hope was killed in a ground accident at Strathpine, Queensland. He was accidentally shot while practising ground combat with Leading Aircraftman Stanley Melbourne McKerlie (126459) who was discharged from the RAAF on 20 February 1946.
