On 30 December 1943 Warrant Officer Hill was detailed to ferry a Wellington aircraft from Foggia airfield to its base at the nearby Tortorella landing ground. Soon after take-off the aircraft was seen to fail to pull out of a dive from 1,000 feet and crash at 1130 hours. Warrant Officer Hill was killed and there were no other crew members on board.
