On 15 July 1941 Wellington R3171 took off from Feltwell to attack Duisburg, Germany. At 0300 hours its port engine was set on fire as a result of enemy action, and the aircraft attempting to return to base got within 30 miles of the English coast, and force landed in the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The bodies of two of the crew members were alter washed ashore in the Netherlands and the remaining four missing crew members are recorded as having lost their lives at sea.
