On 5 October 1941 Spitfire X9445 flown by Sergeant Hiddleston was involved in a mid-air collision with Spitfire K9817 flown by Sergeant Cyril Brennan (404771) (Killed: 25 June 1942). The accident occurred one quarter of a mile off shore at 1525 hours near Southerdown, Glamorgan. X9445 dived into the sea while K9817 was flown safely back to base. It was recorded in 1948 that Sergeant Hiddleston had lost his life at sea.
