During an armed reconnaissance on 22 May 1943 Flying Officer Hickey flying Beaufighter aircraft X8079 was reported missing believed killed when he was shot down in a battle with four Me109s and crashed into the sea 30 miles north west of Maritimo Island, Sicily.
