At 1015 hours on 7 February 1944 Vultee Vengeance AN692 crashed at Cattack, Orissa, while flying in a thunderstorm and endeavouring to make a forced landing in a paddy field. Flight Sergeant Hewetson, flying solo, was killed in the crash.
