On 26 March 1943 Spitfire ER876 flown by Flight Sergeant Herberte took off in company with other aircraft of the Squadron to intercept enemy aircraft. At 1045 hours south of El Hamma, the formation dived to attack 8 ME 109s. Nothing was heard from ER 876 and it failed to return to base.
