On a Circus 68 mission on 9 August 1941, a Spitfire flown by Sergeant Haydon was shot down by an Me109 lighter at Tournehem, approximately 13.5 miles south east of Calais, France. He unsuccessfully attempted to bale out and died of his wounds.
