At 0700 hours on 24 October 1943, Spitfire BR414 took off from a Photo Reconnaissance detachment at Nicosia Cyprus, detailed to carry out a photographic reconnaissance of the Dodecanese Islands. The estimated time of arrival of the aircraft at base was 1200 hours and when the aircraft was overdue, an Air Sea Rescue search was carried out. The aircraft had crashed into a hill near Bodrum, Turkey, and Pilot Officer Hay had been killed.
