At about 1100 hours on 27November 1944, Kittyhawk A29-581 flown by Sergeant Hattersley was damaged by anti-aircraft fire and was seen weaving at 8,000 feet, with a subsequent vertical dive into the sea, about 1,000 yards north of Doorn Island in the area of Cape Noejew, Dutch New Guinea. Flames and smoke were seen rising from the water, but no parachute was seen and no trace of Sergeant Hattersley was seen. A29-581 was lost at position 00.54S 131.25E.
