Lancaster LM459 took off from Ludford Magna on the night of 27/28 May 1944 detailed to carryout special ABC (Air Borne Cigar – electronic jamming) duties in support of the raid on military camp installations at Bourg-Leopold. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Sommelsdijk in Zuid Holland on the island of Overflakkee and in the north west outskirts of Middleharnis and all the crew members were killed.
