On 4 April 1917, Lieutenant Hancock resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.
During a ferry flight on 1 March 1919, Sopwith Snipe aircraft E6157 flown by Lieutenant Hancock caught fire in flight and involuntary looped, throwing him from the aircraft and he was killed.
