On 9 March 1942, Spitfire AA849 flown by Sergeant Hamilton was returning with other aircraft from operations over northern France and was in the vicinity of Cape Gris Nez when they were attacked from astern by two enemy aircraft. AA849 was seen diving and fell into the sea in an inverted position, about 8 to 10 miles from Cape Gris Nez. An oil patch was seen but no trace of the aircraft or Sergeant Hamilton was sighted.
