On 19 August 1918, Second Lieutenant Grove was killed when Sopwith camel B.9212 crashed into the sea near Turnberry, Scotland.  He was killed during gunnery practice when he spun into the sea after he did not restart his aircraft engine.  A witness reported that he has just completed a dive on the target down to 200 feet when he did a climbing turn to the left apparently without his engine powered, stalled, and spun into the sea.  The Court of Enquiry concluded that the accident was caused by an error of judgement on the part of the pilot.
