At 2241 hours on the night of 27 April 1942, Wellington Z8901 took off from Lichfield detailed to scatter leaflets in the Lille region of France. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed at Sauter (Namur), 3 kms south south east of Philiperville, Belgium and the crew members were killed.
