On 18 April 1942, Kittyhawk A29-21 flown by Sergeant Granville was last seen 30 miles north east of Port Moresby diving steeply and emitting smoke while engaged in aerial combat with Zero fighters. A29-21 failed to return to base and Sergeant Granville was killed.
