On 8August 1943, Kittyhawk FS423 one of a formation of 12 aircraft engaged in strafing the road from Giardini to Catania, Sicily, just south of Mt Etna. Intense anti-aircraft fire was encountered from the surrounding hills and FS423 was seen to receive a direct hit and crash, killing Flight Sergeant Goulder.
