At 2312 hours on the night of 12 June 1944Lancaster LM156 took off from Mildenhall to bomb Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. It was later established that the aircraft was hit by flak and crashed near Buer Hasbel on
13 June 1944. Buer Hasbel is approximately 5 miles north of Gelsenkirchen. All the crew members were killed.
