At 1658 hours on 17 January 1943 Lancaster W4157 took off from Waddington to attack Berlin. Nothing further was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it did not return to base. With no trace of the aircraft or crew being found following post war investigations and enquiries, it was recorded in 1950 that the crew members were missing with no known graves.
