Wellington DV818 took-off from Station Elsham Wolds at 2308 hours on the night of 22 June 1942 to bomb Essen, Germany. The aircraft did not return to base from this mission. Following post war enquiries and investigations, it was discovered that the aircraft came down in the sea off the coast of the Netherlands. Five crew members had been killed and one had become a Prisoner of War.
