On 13 December 1940, Gladiator N5765 flown by Flight Lieutenant Gaden was one of a number of Gladiators engaged in air combat with enemy aircraft and outnumbered by about 7 to 1. Flight Lieutenant Gaden is believed to have engaged and shot down an enemy aircraft which in turn shot him down and he was found dead in his crashed aircraft.
