On 31 October 1942, Spitfire BL923 flown by Sergeant Furlong crashed into the sea about 1.5 miles east of Ramsgate and he was killed. The aircraft was on an operational patrol over a convoy, which was close to the English coast north north-east of Margate. The aircraft loss was due to engine failure, and the aircraft dived into the sea.
