On 25 December 1915, Lieutenant Franklin resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

On 24 June 1917, Lieutenant Franklin, flying Martinsyde aircraft 4250, was killed when the aircraft went into a spinning nose-dive and crashed.
