On 4 July 1944, Kittyhawk FX704 flown by Pilot Officer Field was flying Yellow 1 in a section of 6 aircraft on a reconnaissance in the Arezzo/Florence area, Italy. Motor transports were sighted on the ground, and the aircraft commenced dive bombing from 6,000 feet. FX704’s bomb was released below normal height and the aircraft disintegrated in the air and crashed.
