Warrant Officer Evans, an Ammunition Examiner, was engaged in demolishing the aerodrome at Vunakanu. He was in a party of Australians led by Captain Colin Lachlan McInnes (VX46497) (Discharged: 13 June 1946) of the 2/22 Battalion AIF who escaped from Rabaul on 23 January 1942 and left New Britain by pinnace. On 20 March 1942 Warrant Officer Evans died of malaria at Melik Plantation near cape St George, New Ireland, and was buried near there. His grave could not be subsequently located.
