Second Lieutenant Edson, an Observer, died of wounds received in action while on an offensive patrol. He was wounded during aerial combat in a Bristol Fighter 2B* aircraft flown by Lieutenant Marcus Walford Turner RFC who was also wounded but landed the aircraft.
* The RAF Casualty Card identifies the aircraft as a Nieuport Scout, a single-seat aircraft. 22nd Squadron did not operate this aircraft type in 1917.
