On 8 May 1941 Spitfires R6619 and X4931 were engaged in formation flying practice. The aircraft collided in the air and crashed at Junction Croft in the vicinity of Culter, near Aberdeen, Scotland.
R6619 hit the ground at great speed after part of the port wing fell off and Sergeant Drummond was killed. Pilot Officer G S P Bain (85647) (RAFVR) the pilot of X4931 who was seriously injured tried to make a forced landing but was unsuccessful.
