Leading Aircraftman Philip Davis, Fitter IIA, died of self-inflicted injuries in the Abu Sueir Hospital, Egypt, on 5 August 1942. He was serving 14 days close detention for insubordination. A Court of Inquiry concluded that there had been gross negligence on the part of the Guard Commander in allowing Leading Aircraftman Davis access to the Guard Room where he was able to pick up a rifle and a cartridge.
